Tragedy struck the East Devon coast on Christmas Day, prompting a stark warning for Boxing Day sea swimmers. Following the disappearance of two men, Devon and Cornwall Police are urging everyone to reconsider their plans for a festive dip. This heartbreaking incident serves as a crucial reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea, especially during the winter months.
Emergency services responded swiftly to a distress call at Budleigh Salterton beach at 10:25 am on Christmas Day. A group of people had encountered difficulties in the water. While some were safely brought to shore, two men, aged in their 40s and 60s, remain missing despite extensive search efforts by the RNLI and Coastguard. Their families have been informed, and the local community is reeling from the devastating event.
Detective Superintendent Hayley Costar of Devon and Cornwall Police expressed deep sorrow, stating, "Our thoughts remain firmly with the families and friends of the two men..." She also highlighted the significant presence of emergency services throughout the day as they conducted their search.
Before the tragedy, numerous official and unofficial swims had already been canceled due to weather warnings. Although no official warnings were in place for Boxing Day, authorities are strongly advising against sea swimming. The Teignmouth RNLI's Boxing Day Walk in the Sea has also been canceled as a result of the incident.
The Coastguard confirmed they were alerted around 10 am on Thursday, with rescue teams and helicopters from Exmouth, Beer, Teignmouth, and Torbay, alongside police and ambulance services, immediately dispatched to the scene. The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust reported treating and discharging two people at the scene and transporting one to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.
But here's where it gets controversial... A yellow weather warning for wind was in effect on Christmas Day, leading to the cancellation of several Christmas and Boxing Day swims across Devon and Cornwall. The Met Office had warned of strong and gusty winds, with peak gusts potentially reaching 55-65 mph along exposed coasts. These conditions created large waves, posing an additional hazard.
And this is the part most people miss... The combination of strong winds, large waves, and cold water temperatures can quickly turn a festive swim into a life-threatening situation. The authorities' caution underscores the importance of prioritizing safety and respecting the power of the sea.
