Oh no! Cavaliers fans are holding their breath as star guard Darius Garland is sidelined, and it's all because of a pesky toe injury. This time, it's a sprained right great toe that will keep him out of action for at least a week.
Garland sustained the injury on January 14th during a game against the Philadelphia 76ers, which caused him to miss Friday's game against the same team. Further evaluation and imaging revealed a Grade 1 sprain. The team will reevaluate the seventh-year guard in 7 to 10 days as he undergoes treatment.
This isn't Garland's first toe-related struggle. He missed 16 games earlier this season due to a nagging injury to his left great toe. He even underwent surgery on that toe during the offseason.
Before this latest setback, Garland was putting up impressive numbers, averaging 20.2 points and 7.4 assists over the last 16 games. He was also shooting a solid 50.4% from the field and making 42 out of 100 three-pointers.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Cavaliers have been battling injuries all season. After boasting the best record in the Eastern Conference last season, they're currently at 24-19 and sitting fifth in the East as they head into Monday afternoon's game against the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
What do you think? Can the Cavaliers stay competitive without Garland? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
