Daniil Medvedev's Radical ATP Rankings Overhaul Proposal: Fewer Points, More Mandatory Events (2026)

Medvedev's Vision for ATP Rankings: More Mandatory Events, Fewer Points

The former world No. 1, Daniil Medvedev, has proposed a radical overhaul of the ATP rankings system, suggesting that players should compete in more mandatory events and earn fewer points. In an interview at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Medvedev argued that the current system forces players to chase points relentlessly, leading to burnout.

Medvedev's Solution: Streamlining the Tour

Instead of reducing the number of tournaments, Medvedev envisions a streamlined tour where top players compete in the same tournaments during the same weeks. This structure would prevent players from padding their rankings with easier points at lower-tier events, easing pressure across the tour. He suggests making four Grand Slams and 11 Masters events, with the remaining tournaments possibly offering no ranking points.

The Challenge: Financial Incentives and Tournament Scale

However, this proposal faces challenges. There are currently 16 ATP 500 tournaments and 30 ATP 250 events, and organizers have strong financial incentives to maintain their status. The ATP Tour also cannot realistically buy back tournament licenses it has already sold.

Medvedev acknowledges that significant changes are unlikely to occur during his playing career, but he believes that the current system needs reform to address player burnout and the relentless pursuit of points.
